Greeter: Jack Laidlaw
Reader: John Morden
Coffee Hour Hosts: Sarah Hoag and Jane Snook

TODAY
(February 19)

The flowers at the lectern are from the Hoag Family in memory of John Warner Hoag (February 21, 1930 - September 11, 2005)

This Sunday, February 19, 2012 the Reverend Wes Denyer will be preaching a sermon entitled “The Emerald City of Oz,” as we remember that classic, old movie – “The Wizard of Oz,” and we consider what the Christian faith has to say to those of us who feel like we’re a Tin Man, or a cowardly lion or a scarecrow? This Sunday there will be no Sunday School, but this sermon will appeal not only to adults, but to every child, and the child within all of us, who wonders about his or her place in the world. As well, activity bags will be available for the children at each entrance to the sanctuary. This Sunday’s musical offerings include music by Gerald Finzi, Johann Pachelbel, and Samuel S. Wesley.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

The Hospitality Team thanks everyone who participates in making the coffee hour enjoyable. We encourage you to continue participating in this aspect of “Hospitality”, perhaps along with another person or family. We also appreciate your help in welcoming visitors.

UPCOMING EVENTS

Movie Night on Friday, February 24th at the church. There will be a showing of the film "The Help" at 4:30 pm, and the dinner and discussion will begin at 6:30 pm. A sign up sheet will be available at coffee hour. Please see Pat Keith if you wish to borrow the DVD.

The Sign Up for “New Beginnings — The Future of RPC — a conversation” This programme will be an opportunity to enter into discussion with the Reverend Wes Denyer and others on the future of our Mission, Ministry and Finances at Rosedale. You may sign up to attend an event with the insert you received in the mail (also in the Order of Service this morning), today at Coffee Hour in the Great Hall or by emailing the Reverend Wes Denyer (wesdenyer@rogers.com). We hope that every member of the congregation will attend one of our “New Beginnings” events. The Planning Team includes Wes Denyer, Anne Donaldson-Page and Adam Sherriff-Scott.

Bridge & Scrabble on Thursday, March 2nd with coffee and tea at 12:30 pm. Play takes place between 1-3 pm. This is an informal, “come when you can” group with players at all levels. New players are welcome at this friendly gathering. We play every other Thursday and invite you to just show up. For information, you may contact Pat Keith at (416) 425-0562.

World Day of Prayer on Friday March 2nd at 1:00 pm at St. Andrew's United Church, 117 Bloor Street East. This ecumenical service is written by the women of Malaysia. Representatives of our congregation will be taking part. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Book Club on Tuesday, March 6th at the church. We will be discussing "The Beauty of Humanity Movement" by Camilla Gibb and "The Gift of Rain" by Tan Twan Eng. Both books are now available for borrowing. Please speak to Irene King. The novels are each set in Southeast Asia and deal with the terrible impact of the Vietnam War and World War II on the lives of ordinary people.

Evangel Hall Dinner on Sunday, March 11th at Evangel Hall, 552 Adelaide Street West at Bathurst. The menu will be hearty beef stew, salad, rolls and pie for desert. We are looking for 8-10 people from RPC to help serve the meal (late afternoon). Sandy Johnston (ajohnsto@chass.utoronto.ca) is the co-ordinator for this event. Next Sunday there will be ‘sign-up’ sheets for donations of food (and the stew recipe that can be made ahead and frozen) and help on the day.

Evangel Hall, a mission of the Presbyterian Church, helps homeless, socially isolated, marginalized and impoverished individuals find a safe haven from the streets. Every day, they will feed, clothe, and find shelter for up to 200 men and women, providing showers, laundry facilities, sundry items and toiletries needed to keep their body and mind healthy and dignified.

MALAWI: Worshipping together. Our gifts to Presbyterians Sharing support Mike and Debbie Burns as they serve the Blantyre Synod of the Church of Central Africa Presbyterian in Malawi. Debbie shares, “While we enjoy worshipping in St. James’ main church, we look forward to Sunday worship at one of the three prayer houses and weekly Wednesday evening services at the different mulagas (cottages). These services provide an intimate time for prayer, praise, study and fellowship, something that is difficult to obtain in a sanctuary filled with 700 people!” Let us pray for Mike, Debbie and the people of St. James as they share the good news of the gospel in Malawi.
